New A and CLA AMG Family: A 45 S, CLA 35 and CLA 45 S AMG

Lots of news in the AMG entry level category. The A 35 AMG we did testdrive recently and now the same M260 fourcylinder is finding its way to the CLA. Both as Fourdoor Coupé and shooting brake. What’s more are the successors of the 45 AMG models that can count on a brand new M139 one-man one-engine.

CLA 35 4MATIC

The Fourdoor Coupé and the Shooting Brake both come with 4MATIC with a front wheel drive preference. In combination with the 306 hp from the 2 litre fourcylinder and a 7 DCT (double clutch) automatic gearbox, the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes only 4,9 seconds. Launch color is sunyellow to brighten up the world. Fuel consumption should be limited to 7,4 litre per 100 km. There is a bolted lightweight aluminium plate under the engine and some additional diagonal braces to increase torsional stiffness of the CLA 35 AMG.

A 45 4MATIC+

Next level is the new 45 generation with the new M139 engine which is manufactured in Affalterbach. AMG calls it the super-sportscar in the compact class. That sets expectations. Starting with some numbers:

• A 45: 387 hp at 6.500 rpm, 480 Nm between 4.750 & 5.000 rpm, 8,3 l per 100 km, 189 g CO₂ /km, top speed: 250 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 4,0 s
• A 45 S: 421 hp at 6.750 rpm, 480 Nm between 5.000 & 5.250 rpm, 8,3 l per 100 km, 189 g CO₂ /km, top speed: 250 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 3,9 s

Also new is the AMG Speedshift DCT 8G automatic transmission in combination with the 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with fully variable torque distribution that even allows a drift mode. This is possible as each rear wheel has a multidisc clutch (AMG Torque Control). The exterior design is quite distinctive with the typical AMG Panamerica grille. The 45 comes with 18 inch wheels, the 45 S with 19 inch wheels. At the rear we find two round twin tailpipes with a diameter of 82 mm for the 45 models and 90 mm for the 45 S models.

Other technical highlights:

• The engine is rotated around its vertical axis by 180°
• Electronically controlled charge pressure
• All-aluminium crankcase that can be cooled to different temperature levels
• Cylinder liners: coated with Nanoslide (mirror-like surface)
• Two stages petrol injection

CLA 45

• CLA 45: 387 hp at 6.500 rpm, 480 Nm between 4.750 & 5.000 rpm, 8,1 l per 100 km, 185 g CO₂ /km, top speed: 250 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 4,1 s
• CLA 45 S: 421 hp at 6.750 rpm, 480 Nm between 5.000 & 5.250 rpm, 8,1 l per 100 km, 186 g CO₂ /km, top speed: 250 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 4,0 s
