Outgoing on the engine cover it looks like the brand new Mercedes-Maybach S 650 has a modified 6 liter V12 from the Mercedes S 600 and not the engine from the S 65 AMG. However why updating the current S 600 V12 with 530 hp when AMG has an engine in its racks with already an output of 630 hp? The answer is quite simple. In contrast with the previous S 600 which had a different engine (5,5 liter M275 V12) compared to the S 65 AMG (6,0 liter M279 V12), the current S 600 has exactly the same engine basis as the S 65 AMG. This is because since 2012 AMG is responsible for the development of all Mercedes V12 engines. The higher horsepower of the S 65 can be explained by different engine mapping, larger turbos, other wastegates ducts, cilinder heads and ignition coils. In other words, the S 650 AMG has the engine of the S 65 AMG, just with a different engine cover. I hope your sleepless nights will be over now …
